Hands Across the Sand on Tybee Island

Help Us Build a Human Boom at Noon on June 26th

TYBEE ISLAND, GA-(June 18, 2010) At noon on June 26th, concerned citizens will gather together on Tybee Island and join hands to draw a line in the sand between Center and 19th Streets along the shore as part of a worldwide movement against offshore drilling and in favor of renewable energy, specifically offshore wind, solar, geothermal, wave, and tidal power.  Captains at all numbered streets will help coordinate the event beginning at 11 am.    This symbolic "Human Boom" is intended to keep oil from reaching Georgia's beaches.

The BP disaster in the gulf has proven beyond doubt that the risks of drilling far outweigh any possible benefits from continuing to rely on fossil fuels.  South Carolina, Georgia, and the east coast of Florida derive $25 billion every year from the eco-system-dependent hospitality and commercial and recreational fishing industries.  If the latest geological estimates are correct, the most we could hope to extract from the outer continental shelf off these three states is a total of $1.2 billion a year for 25 years -- a grand total of $30 billion. When faced with this equation, why would we even consider risking our entire way of life for such a small, short-term return?  We need to stand united to convince state leaders to reject any attempt to drill for oil off the southeast coast, or we could all suffer from another man-made disaster.

The goal of HANDS is to raise public awareness of the need to shift state and federal subsidies from finite, polluting fossil fuels to infinitely renewable energy sources that consume no fuel and emit no greenhouse gases.

This isn't about politics:  offshore drilling poses a major threat to coastal economies worldwide.  We're inviting everyone-liberals, conservatives, industrialists, and environmentalists-to join hands and say, "No to offshore drilling and Yes to clean energy!"  Please join hands with us at noon, June 26th on Tybee's beach!
